Hidden in a corner of Main Street USA is a little barber shop called Harmony Barber Shop. And you might think it's just a front or decoration to make Main Street feel more authentic.
But you'd be wrong.
This is an actual little barber shop where you can get a quick trim while at the Magic Kingdom.
If you're looking for something extra special or unique to do with a little one at the parks, you might consider booking a first haircut appointment at Harmony Barber Shop. Here I'll explain how it works, the cost, and our experience taking our daughter for her first haircut.
If you are interested in having your child get their first haircut at Harmony Barber Shop, you will want to consider making advanced reservations.
You can make reservations at Disney website 180 days in advance. While haircuts at Harmony Barber Shop might not fill up as quickly as other popular stops (like Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique), walk in spots are extremely limited. So I highly suggest making reservations early.
If you can't get a reservation and you really want to experience a haircut here, I'd suggest getting to the park at opening and walking in right away to get a walk in slot. If times are available you probably wont get to select your time slot, but this will be your best chance to take advantage of this experience.
Just note that Harmony Barber Shop does not have the same hours as regular Magic Kingdom park hours. They often close well before the park closes. Harmony Barber Shop is also not a part of any Extra Magic Hours. You can check the shop hours on Disney's website.
Harmony Barber Shop is a real barber shop, but they wont offer a full selection of services that you might expect at a traditional barber shop. You wont be able to get your hair washed before your cut, and they wont offer any additional services like a clean shave.
But you can get a trim at this fun stop. And first haircuts even get a few fun extras. Here are the packages offered at Harmony Barber Shop:
My First Haircut Package - $25
Child's Haircut - $18
Adult Haircut - $19
If you are nervous about getting your hair cut at a theme park, know that all of the barbers at Harmony Barber Shop are state licensed cosmetologists. They also work with children on a daily basis, and will be comfortable trimming a young child's hair.
You'll also want to note that they do not have sinks to wash your hair. So before you come in for a cut you'll want to make sure that your hair is clean and combed before your appointment. They will spray your hair lightly with water to brush it out, but they will not be able to clean your hair entirely.
Gratuity is not included in the price, and cannot be added to your credit card. So if you plan on tipping your stylist, please make sure that you bring cash with you to your appointment.
Lastly, guests who are under the age of 17 must have an adult with them during their appointment. So if you are bringing a child for a cut, make sure you plan accordingly.
On a recent family trip to Disney World I decided that I wanted to get my 2 year-old daughter's hair cut for the first time. So I made reservations online at Harmony Barber Shop.
I booked my reservations several months in advance, and had my pick of time slots. I highly recommend booking this service in advance. While we were at our appointment several people came in asking about first haircuts, but were told that all appointments were booked up for the day.
Before our appointment I talked up the haircut to my daughter so she wouldn't be surprised or scared. So she was very excited when I told her it was time to head over to the barber shop. But even the most excited 2 year-old gets a little nervous when doing something new. So when she got up in to the barber chair, I could see the nerves on her face.
Our barber Diane was lovely with my daughter. When she saw that there were some nerves about getting a haircut, Diane started putting stickers all over my daughter to make her smile.
And it worked.
So she got to work spritzing and combing her hair.
She only cut about an inch or so off her hair. My daughter has beautiful hair, but it just needed a clean up to even it all out. My daughter did great, but Mom wasn't ready to part with too much hair just yet.
When we were done Diane gave my daughter her very own pair of Mickey Ears. On the back they said "My 1st Haircut." She also got a certificate commemorating the big event. And I got a little bag with the first trimmings of her hair.
Overall I would definitely recommend the first haircut experience at Harmony Barber Shop. Our local mall has a place that cuts kids hair, and they charge $20. This service not only gets me the fun and unique first haircut experience, but it also includes Mickey Ears! Which retail for $18 at the parks. So the price is more than worth it.
My daughter was so proud to have her hair cut at Disney World
We celebrated our haircut with a Mickey Bar, and by showing everyone all of the stickers on our shirt from the barber shop.
She also proudly showed her Mickey Ears to character after character for the rest of the trip.
Both myself and my daughter recommend getting your very first haircut at Harmony Barber shop for a fun and unique experience!
