Disney Genie Service at Disney World

DIsney Genie

Disney Fastpass is officially dead!

Coming fall 2021 to Walt Disney World Resort, Disney Genie is a FREE digital service designed to create your Disney itinerary.

What is Disney Genie?

According to Disney, "We’ve been listening to your feedback – you want planning to be easier, you want more flexibility and you want better tools to help you make the most of your visit – and that’s exactly what Disney Genie is here to do. We’ve made significant investments in this cool new technology, which guides you through our theme parks with tips that can help you reduce time in lines, discover magic around every corner and take the guesswork out of “what’s next.”

Disney Genie will be built right in to the My Disney Experience apps. So you wont need to have a separate app on your phone.

Disney Genie is designed to maximize park time by creating a personalized itinerary for you. This feature will map out an entire day based on your preferences. This includes specific attractions, food experiences, entertainment, characters, etc.

You share general interests, such as princesses, villains, Pixar, Star Wars, thrill rides, etc, and Disney Genie will do the planning for you.

Features of Disney Genie

According to Disney, additional features include:

Get Itinerary Updates from Morning to Night: Disney Genie will continue to update your itinerary throughout your day, so you can be more spontaneous and go with the flow.

Find Your Favorites at a Glance: Create your very own personal tip board to instantly see your favorites. It will display current AND forecasted future wait times, helping you predict when you might experience quicker entry to attractions.

Enjoy More Flexibility and Fun: Disney Genie brings existing planning features together in one place. Join a virtual queue at certain attractions, make dining and experience reservations, mobile order food at many locations, get help from a virtual assistant and more.

Disney Genie

All of the features listed above are FREE, and available to all Disney World guests. There is no extra charge for the basic form of Disney Genie.

There is, however, a paid upgrade called Disney Genie+

Disney Genie Upgrades

Disney is offering a paid upgrade that offers more convenience and flexibility called Disney Genie+

Disney Genie+

  • Disney Genie+ service (available for purchase): For a starting price of $15 per ticket per day (prices based on date), choose the next available time to arrive at a variety of attractions and experiences using the Lightning Lane entrance. You can make one selection at a time, throughout the day – from classics like Haunted Mansion to thrill rides like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and newer favorites like Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (attractions subject to limited availability). This convenient option is the next evolution of the fan-favorite Disney MaxPass service from Disneyland Resort. Disney Genie+ will also include Disney parks-themed audio experiences and photo features to capture your memories – augmented reality lenses for those visiting Walt Disney World Resort and unlimited Disney PhotoPass downloads from your day if you are visiting Disneyland Resort.
  • Individual attraction selections (available for purchase): Schedule a time to arrive at up to two highly demanded attractions like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train each day using the Lightning Lane (subject to limited availability; attractions not included with Disney Genie+). Pricing for this option will vary by date, attraction and park and will be announced closer to launch.

Lightning Lane selections will be made on the same day of your visit and can be used across multiple theme parks, great for those who love the Park Hopper option. Attractions continue to offer a traditional standby queue, or a virtual queue at certain attractions likeStar Wars: Rise of the Resistance – to maximize flexibility.

Disney Genie Explained

To say that this new system is confusing is an understatement. The names they gave the different parts of the Genie system alone leaving many puzzled.

Here I will try to clear up all of the questions surrounding Disney Genie. I'll discuss what each part of the Genie system is, how they work, and answer your questions about this new service that has replaced Fastpass.

What is the difference between Disney Genie andLightningLanes?

Lightning Lane is simply the name of the shorter ride queue. It isn't a product or a service. It is literally the name of the line.

When you purchase Genie+ and select your ride, you will head to the Lightning Lane ride queue at your ride time.

Disney Genie is the service included in the My Disney Experience app. There are essentially 3 parts to Disney Genie. I'll break them down here:

  • Disney Genie: This is the free service that is included with the My Disney Experience app. Genie will get your preferences and help you plan your time at the parks by providing a mapped out itinerary. All guests will have access and can use Disney Genie during their time at the parks.
  • Genie+: This is a paid upgrade that allows you to select one attraction at a time throughout the day, and skip the regular ride queue in favor of a shorter Lightning Lane (formerly Fastpass queue).
  • Individual Attraction Selection: This is the option to purchase Lightning Lane access (remember... Lightning Lane is just the name of the line) a la cart on select "big ticket" rides. These rides will NOT be a part of the Genie+ ride list. So this will be your only way to skip the line on these rides. You can schedule a time to arrive at up to two highly demanded attractions each day using the Lightning Lane entrance.

When will Disney Genie and Genie+ be available?

You can add Disney Genie+ to your account starting at 7am on the day of your park visit if you are a Disney Resort guest (at park opening if you are off site), or you can add it to your tickets for the entirety of your trip.

What does Genie+ cost?

Disney Genie+ pricing starts at $15 per day, per ticket. The prices will vary based on date. Prices will be available each morning before you purchase.

Can I buy Genie+ or Lightning Lane for just 1 day, or does it need to be the entire length of my ticket/resort stay?

You can add Genie+ through the app on each day of your trip.

So you can plan your use of Disney Genie based on your ride priorities, crowd levels, your schedule, etc.

What does Genie+ include?

Genie+ includes the ability to reserve ride times and skip the wait using Lightning Lanes.

It also includes AR filters for your photos, and an audio guided tour of the park.

What does Individual Ride Selection cost?

Pricing for Individual Ride Selection will vary based on the attraction and the date.

Pricing will start at $7 per attraction, and will go up to about $20 per attraction.

For exact prices check the My Disney Experience app on the day of your visit. There you will find exact pricing and availability.

Can I combine Genie+, Lightning Lane purchase, and regular virtual queue for Guardians?

Yes!

You can purchase Disney Genie+, and you can also add individual rides a la cart, AND you can join the virtual boarding queue for Guardians!

If you plan on doing all 3, it's important to keep in mind that all of these ride selections become available in the app at the same time. So you may need to work quickly to secure ride times on all 3.

If I were coming up with a game plan, I would go for the FREE virtual boarding pass, then move on to Individual Ride Selections, and then Genie+ selections.

Guardians being included in Individual Ride Selections does mean that there will be fewer boarding groups available. So if this ride is a priority, you'll want to do that first.

What will happen to My Disney Experience?

Nothing.

My Disney Experience will still be the app you use for your trip. Disney Genie is just a feature added to the app.

What rides and attractions will be included in Disney Genie+?

What time can I reserve Lightning Lane rides?

If you decide to purchase individual Lightning Lane access you can do so at 7am on the day of your visit if you are a Disney Resort guest.

If you are staying off-site you can purchase when the park opens.

Keep in mind that 7am is the same time that Genie+ can reserve rides, and the same time that free virtual boarding passes for Rise of the Resistance open. So if you plan on doing more than one option you may need to work fast.

What time can I reserve Genie+ rides?

If you have Genie+ you can reserve your first ride starting at 7am. This time is for all guests, regardless if they are Disney Resort guests or off-site guests.

Keep in mind that7am is the same time that individual Lightning Lane rides can be reserved, and the same time that free virtual boarding passes for Rise of the Resistance open. So if you plan on doing more than one option you may need to work fast.

Can I use Lightning Lane/Genie+ if I am park hopping?

          Yes!

Currently park hopping begins at 2pm. If you have park hopper tickets or an annual pass that allows hopping you can reserve rides after 2pm for your second park.

Is there a perk if I'm staying at a Disney Resort?

Currently the only perk of the Disney Genie system for Disney Resort guests is that they will be able to purchase and reserve individual Lightning Lane rides starting at 7am. Off-site guests will have to wait until park opening to do so.

All other benefits of Disney Genie and Genie+ are identical for onsite and off-site guests.

Can annual passholders add Genie+ to their pass for the year?

There is currently no option to add Genie+ to an annual pass account.

If you have an annual pass you will be able to access Genie+ starting at $15 per day or individual Lightning Lane purchase on the day of your park visit.

I would not be surprised if this changes in the near future. If this changes this page will be updated with details.

If I pick a ride time can I change it or refresh the app for a better time?

You can refresh the app to look for better times.

In fact, I definitely recommend doing this if there is a ride (or time) that you really want.

If you are going to refresh, I suggest making sure you add the ride you want to "My Top Picks" in the Genie+ section of My Disney Experience. This will ensure that your ride stays at the top of your screen.

Only select the ride once you get a time that you want. Once you select the ride and time you wont be able to edit or change. So keep refreshing until the time you want appears.

Can I use Genie+ or Individual Ride Selection on the same ride more than once?

          No.

Individual Ride Selection is limited to 2 rides per day. So you can select your 2 rides for purchase, and then if you want to re-ride you will have to stand in the regular standby queue.

With Genie+ you can only use the service for any one ride once per day. For example, if you want to use Genie+ to skip the line on Big Thunder Mountain, you can use it once on that ride and then that ride will not be available anymore.

Is there a limit to the number of Genie+ purchases any one day?

Disney is limited the number of guests that can purchase Genie+ on any given day.

Will there be paper Lightning Lane tickets if I don't have a smartphone?

Currently it doesn't look like there will be a way to take advantage of Lightning Lane if you don't have a smartphone.

If this changes or we learn otherwise this page will be updated.

Will Genie+ be linked to DAS?

          No.

DAS has it's own new system for people with disabilities. While you will be able to select rides through the My Disney Experience app, it won't be a part of Genie+. You can read more about this systemhere.

What are your recommendations for using Genie+ and Individual Ride Selection?

I think on busy days at the park, Genie+ can definitely be a useful tool. I can see this being ideal for guests on shorter trips or visiting during peak times.

I also think this can be a useful tool if you are planning a short trip and want to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time.

If you are on a budget know that even big ticket rides like Rise of the Resistance and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train can often be enjoyed with fairly low wait times if you take advantage ofEarly Entry for resort guestsor if you ride during an evening show or at park closing.
